About two thirds of adults are bothered by excess fat or fullness below the chin (double chin). If you are among this group, a new medical fat cell destroying treatment may be an option for you.
Excess fat or fullness below the chin can occur in all body types and is not limited to those who are overweight. This can have a negative impact on a person’s facial balance, giving an older, heavier look that can lead to lower self-esteem.
This treatment is based on a naturally occurring active ingredient (deoxycholic acid/sodium deoxycholate) that breaks down (lyses) fat cells resulting in their permanent destruction and removal (lipolysis of adipocytes). This has been shown in controlled clinical trials to result in sustained, permanent improvement in people with moderate to severe fullness under the chin (the double chin).
This is a targeted treatment. When expertly and correctly utilised it specifically targets fat and not other parts of the skin and subcutaneous structures. Although naturally occurring, it does cause inflammation (redness, swelling and some tenderness) as it works. This may be necessary and partly responsible for some of its benefits including an apparent skin tightening effect that can be seen in some people after treatment.
This varies between individuals. For most people 2 to 4 in clinic treatments are needed. These are spaced 4-6 or more weeks apart. Benefits and improvement continue to be seen in the following months.
Based on clinical trials (Dermatol Surg 2016;42:S288–S299) there are a number of very effective measures that we follow to make this fat dissolving treatment comfortable. At Kingsway Dermatology and Aesthetics this includes application of a strong anaesthetic cream followed by administration of both a long and short acting locally active anaesthetic. Anaesthetic is fanned into the entire area being treated. Cool packs are then applied.
2 – 4 treatments utilizing 2-3 vials of deoxycholic acid each time are usually required. The number of vials and treatments required varies depending on amount of under chin fat and desired outcome.
After having had the entire treatment area fanned with both long and short acting anaesthetic the unwanted under chin fullness / fat is lysed using carefully placed, targeted pain free injections.
